The Story Behind The Book

billy simons author

Starting in March 2020, I had to, for my own sanity, try to take this complex time and process it into something as approachable and unintimidating as possible, and my hope was that by sharing it, it would help others do the same. Or, at the very least, it would provide some new reading material to share with parents as they were searching for things to do with their homebound kids.

What came about was a nearly daily log of my thoughts and experiences during 2020. Some topics are time specific, some are timeless; there’s farce, satire, whimsy, sentimentality, politics, social justice… I mean, it was quite a year, right?

I see it as a time capsule of this chapter in our lives that has been rocked by a virus, a health care crisis, a social justice explosion, and a hard look into the mirror at who we are, through the lens of children’s poetry— short, rhyming, often silly, illustrated pieces that are accessible to anyone.

It’s my hope that this will last as memento of a year that, while awful for a whole lotta reasons, should not be forgotten. It’s a part of our lives and as such, should be remembered in some way. I think this book is that “some way.”
